The Unofficial Dental Guide

10 Most Important Questions to Ask During Open Enrollment

As some of you may know, I have done dental front office + practice management for over twelve years. With that, I’ve had the unfortunate pleasure of dealing with dental “insurance” for over a decade. During this time, I have encountered countless patients that have fallen prey to dental plan exclusions. It’s also shocking how many patients do not understand the coverage they pay for. In all honestly, I cannot fault them. Had I not been in the industry for so long, I wouldn’t know either.

I created this cheat sheet to help guide you in making an educated decision while selecting a dental plan. These are important questions to take into consideration before choosing which plan, if any, is best for you and your family. I hope this helps!

Most offices will verify insurance and submit claims as a courtesy. However, it is ultimately the patients responsibility to know AND understand their policy. Mistakes happen. It is always best to prepare yourself for worst case scenario by assuming your dental plan will pay nothing. I always try to prepare patients to have extremely low expectations with dental reimbursement as dental “insurance” is more like a coupon than insurance.

As a friendly reminder, it is IMPOSSIBLE for any one dental office to know the ins and outs of every single dental plan. Example: Dental Dental is not just “Delta Dental.” Delta Dental has THOUSANDS of different groups that are individually negotiated, thus, every single dental plan is different. No two are equal.
